Sell the Fake
A set play, from Sportplan, for a backline throw-in at the attacking end. The four attackers set up ball side: the wing attack beside the circle, the centre on top of it, and the goal attack inside the circle, which puts the goal defence on the wrong side of her before anything happens. The shooter takes the throw-in herself, and that is the part worth explaining, because throwing the ball away from goal looks like the wrong idea. She does it because she is the one coming back on for it. She fakes a pass out to the wing attack first, the keeper's weight goes with it, and only then does the ball go to the centre on top of the circle. The shooter steps onto the court behind a keeper who has just bought a dummy, she and the goal attack drive at the ball and split, and the one nearer the post takes the return pass and shoots. The fake is the drill: it has to look like a real pass, and both the wing attack and the centre have to call for it, or there is nothing for the keeper to believe. Seven players, one ball, no cones, on a real court. The clip runs the move once at full speed and then again in slow motion from the other side of the post.
Instructions
- The goal shooter takes the throw-in from behind her own goal line
- The wing attack sets up ball side, beside the goal circle
- The centre sets up ball side, on top of the circle
- The goal attack sets up ball side INSIDE the circle, which takes the goal defence out of the play
- The shooter fakes a pass out to the wing attack and the keeper moves that way
- Both the wing attack and the centre call for it, or the fake is not worth selling
- The throw-in goes to the centre on top of the circle instead
- The shooter steps onto the court, she and the goal attack drive at the ball and split
- The one nearer the post takes the return pass, lands, turns and shoots
Progressions
- Fake to the centre on top and throw to the wing attack instead, so the keeper cannot learn it. Play it against live defence with no script. Let the goal attack take the throw-in and the shooter hold in the circle.
