Getting free drill · 11 seconds

The Opposite Side

A getting free drill, from Sportplan, played in the goal third with three attackers against one defender. A centre feeds from just inside the centre third. A wing attack and a goal attack start wide in the goal third, drive out towards the centre third and turn back, and on the way back the feeder picks one of them. The goal shooter is in the circle with a goal keeper on her, and her job is the whole point of the drill: the moment she sees which side the ball has gone to, she moves to the other side of her keeper. That leaves the keeper between the ball and the shooter, on the ball side, which is where a keeper is supposed to be and is also the wrong place to be when the only ball in is a lob over the top. The lead throws it across the circle, over the keeper's shoulder, and the shooter takes it on the far side. A wing attack is not allowed in the goal circle, so that feed always comes from the edge of it. Then it resets with the ball back at the feeder and goes the other way, so the shooter reads a feed to each side. Five players, one ball, no cones, and the keeper swaps with one of the attackers each round.

Instructions

  • The feeder starts just inside the centre third with the ball, central
  • The wing attack and the goal attack start wide in the goal third, outside the circle
  • The shooter holds in the circle, close to the post, with the keeper between her and the ball
  • Both leads drive out towards the centre third and turn back, and the feeder picks one of them on the way back
  • The shooter holds her ground until the feed actually lands, then moves sharply to the side of the keeper away from the ball
  • The ball comes in as a lob across the circle, over the keeper, because the wing attack cannot enter it
  • The shooter takes it on the far side, and it resets with the ball back at the feeder
  • Go the other way next, so she has to read the side rather than learn it

Progressions

  • The feeder picks the side late, so the shooter has to read it rather than guess. Add a second defender on the feed so the lead is under pressure. Make the shooter send it straight back out of the circle and move again.
