Interception drill · 15 seconds

Intercept And Recover

A goalkeeper's interception drill, from Sportplan, played on the goal circle. Three feeders stand outside it, one about 3 to 4m out from the top and the other two level with the top and out towards each side line. GS and GA work inside the circle trying to get free, and the GK starts in there between them. Every ball that goes in is one the GK is allowed to go for, and the point of the drill is that she will not get most of them: the feeders are not going to serve it to her, so she has to read the feed early and commit to it. When she does take one, she gives it straight back to a feeder and recovers to a position between the two attackers and in front of them rather than across their backs, which is the half of the drill its name is about and the half that usually gets skipped. The feeder then either feeds the same attacker again or moves the ball out to a side feeder first, so the angle it comes in from changes every time and the GK is never set. When an attacker wins it instead, she returns it to a feeder and the drill carries straight on. Every ball here is a pass, nobody carries it anywhere. Six players, one ball, no cones, the circle's own line is the drill, 10 minutes.

Instructions

  • Three feeders outside the goal circle: one about 3 to 4m out from the top, the other two level with the top and out wide. GS and GA inside it, GK starting between them
  • The feeders are trying to get the ball in to GS or GA. The GK is trying to cut it out. That is the whole drill
  • GK goes for every single feed. She will not get most of them, and that is the point, because the feeders are not going to serve it to her
  • Win it and give it straight back to a feeder, then get back in between the two attackers and in front of them before the next one comes in
  • Read it early and go. Waiting to see where it is going to land is already too late
  • The feeders change the angle every time, feeding again or switching out to a side feeder first, so the GK never gets set
  • If the attacker takes it cleanly instead, she returns it to a feeder and it carries straight on
  • Rotate the GK with an attacker and move the feeders round, so everybody does both jobs

Progressions

  • Feeders disguise it: look at one attacker and pass to the other. Add the third feeder’s switch so the angle swings right across the top. Make the GK start from the goal line every rep.
