Circle Shots

A shooting drill, from Sportplan, worked entirely in and around the goal circle. Five cones sit on the circle edge, equidistant round the arc. The shooter starts under the post with nothing, sprints out to the first cone, changes direction hard on it and drives back in, and the feeder throws into the space she has made. She takes it on the move, lands balanced, shoots, collects her own rebound and sends the ball back out. Then the next cone round, and the next, until all five are done and five goals are in. The value is not the shot, which a shooter takes a hundred of a week anyway. It is the stop and the turn: a shooter who runs out and back at one pace gives a keeper nothing to react to, and the drill forces the change of pace five times from five different angles, because every cone sits somewhere different on the arc and the drive back comes in on a different line. Move the feeder and every one of those angles changes again. Two players, one ball, five cones, and the two of them swap over once the five are scored.

Instructions

  • Five cones on the circle edge, spaced evenly round the arc. The shooter starts under the post, the feeder stands outside the circle with the ball
  • She sprints out to a cone and changes direction hard on it. That turn is the drill, not the shot
  • She calls as she turns and drives back in. The feeder throws into the space, not at her
  • Land balanced, then shoot. You cannot run with the ball, so a catch you have to recover from is a shot you have already lost
  • She takes her own rebound and returns the ball to the feeder before going again
  • A different cone every time. Five cones and five goals is one each, and the lap is the rep
  • A miss is taken again. The five are goals, not attempts
  • Swap the shooter and the feeder once the five are in

Progressions

  • Move the feeder, which changes every angle in the drill at once. Add a defender on the shooter. Swap the two of them over after each set of five.
