Getting free drill · 8 seconds
Circle Edge Drive
A getting free drill, from Sportplan, worked across the top of the centre third and the attacking goal third. Three GAs and three WAs queue single file behind a cone each, and the WA line has the balls. The front GA comes off her line and drives, the front WA throws into the space in front of her so she runs onto it, and the GA takes it just inside the goal third and gets rid of it in one step. That is the whole thing: she is the link, not the finisher. You cannot run with the ball in netball, so a catch she has to think about is a catch that costs a penalty pass, and the drill is built so she never has to. Meanwhile the WA follows her own pass down to the circle edge to support her, and nothing comes back: she is an option the defence still has to cover, which is the half most people skip. The feed itself is a long one, most of the length of the goal third, and the length is the point. The GS has spent the drive working her keeper rather than waiting for the ball, so by the time it leaves the GA's hands she is already in a shooting position, and the keeper has just enough time to read the ball and commit and not quite enough to reach it. She shoots, it goes in, the next pair go, and the pair who have just worked jog back to the end of their own queues. Eight players, two balls, two cones.
Instructions
- Three in each line, single file behind a cone, and the WA line has the balls. GS holds inside the goal circle with the GK on her
- The front GA comes off her line and drives for the top of the goal third. The WA throws into the space in front of her so she runs onto it
- One step and it is gone. She is the link, not the finisher, and you cannot run with the ball
- Land upright and balanced, as close to the circle edge as you can get. A catch you have to recover from is a catch you cannot pass off
- The WA follows her own pass down to the circle edge to support. Nothing comes back to her, and that is correct: she is an option the defence has to cover
- The GS works the keeper while the GA is still running, so she is in a shooting position before the ball is ready
- The feed goes in placed away from the keeper. It is a long ball and she will read it, which is exactly why it has to be accurate
- The GK marks the GS and nothing else. She is not defending the first pass
- The pair who have worked join the back of their own queues and the next pair go
Progressions
- Put a defender on the drive. Have the shooter take it first time rather than setting to shoot. Swap the two lines over each rep so everybody does both jobs.
