Transition game · 19 seconds, end to end

Continuous 4v2

A continuous four against two with fast transitions, created by Chris Vincent. A wide grid of about thirty by twenty yards is split into two halves by a central zone a few yards wide, with a goal and a keeper at each end and two defenders living in each half. Four attackers start in the central zone and break out into one half to attack that goal, four against the two defenders in there plus the keeper. They are two players up, so the ball should move before the defenders get set. The moment the ball is dead, scored, saved, blocked or out, they leave it where it is, sprint back into the central zone, and one of them carries on out to the side to collect a fresh ball from the supply. Then they go straight the other way, four against the other two and the other keeper. Non-stop, bouncing end to end, while the defenders stay in their own half guarding their own goal. The clip shows three full runs on three separate balls: out to the right, back to the left, and out to the right again, with the player who finished each attack fetching the next ball from alternate ends of the central zone. Ten players, two goals, two keepers, plenty of balls, twelve to twenty minutes.

Instructions

  • Mark a wide grid, about thirty by twenty yards, and split it with a central zone a few yards wide down the middle
  • A goal and a keeper at each end, and two defenders who stay in their own half all session
  • All four attackers start in the central zone, and one of them runs out of it with the ball
  • It is four against two, so there are two spare: move the ball before the defenders get set
  • Pick the right final ball, shoot when the chance is on and play the better one when it is not
  • The second the ball is dead, leave it and sprint back into the central zone
  • One of the four carries on out to the side, picks up a fresh ball and brings it back in
  • Go straight the other way at the other goal, four against the other two, and keep it going
  • Defenders stay goal side, delay, and show the attackers one way rather than diving in

Variation

  • Put a time limit on each four against two, eight seconds for example, to force quick decisive play. Limit the attackers to two or three touches each. Give the defenders a point for winning the ball and dribbling out through the central zone. Make it a full transition game, the source version, where defenders who win it become the new attackers and switch play to the other goal.
