1v1 shooting drill · 15.5 seconds

Turn and Burn

A continuous 1v1 shooting drill across two goals set at about ninety degrees, a keeper in each. Two cones, each with a queue behind it: one queue attacks the goal on the right, the other attacks the goal at the top, and the attacking side has the balls. A player comes off the cone and attacks their goal 1v1 against a defender, trying to get a shot off past the keeper. The twist is the turn: the instant that attack ends, win or lose, the attacker becomes the defender for the next player at the other goal, so the two stations feed each other and it never stops. The beaten defender goes round the back of their own queue and the next one goes. Everyone attacks, then defends, every cycle. Eight or more players in two queues, plus two goalkeepers, two goals, two cones and plenty of balls, on about a quarter of a pitch, 10 to 15 minutes.

Instructions

  • Two goals at about ninety degrees, a keeper in each, a queue behind a cone for each goal. The first defender runs out from the cone
  • The next player attacks 1v1 at pace and tries to get a shot off past the keeper. The defender tries to stop them
  • Beat your defender and the keeper and shoot early, pick your spot, do not take too many touches
  • The moment your attack ends you turn and become the defender for the next player at the other goal. Then round the back of your queue
  • Attack with pace and commit the defender, do not slow down as you reach the box
  • A clear sight of goal is enough: across the keeper or into the far corner
  • As the defender, show the attacker one way and stay goalside, do not dive in
  • Turn fast. The second your attack ends you are the next defender

Variation

  • Limit the attacker to a set number of touches, or a few seconds to get the shot off. Start the attacker from a wider angle so they have to beat the keeper from the side. Make it fully two-way: if the defender wins it they can counter and attack the other goal. Add a second attacker for a 2v1 to goal.
