Throw-In Bounce Round the Corner
A clever attacking throw-in that goes round the corner. A midfielder disguises it, looking uninterested, then comes alive and checks to the thrower calling for the ball. He takes the throw and, first time and without looking, plays it round the corner into a forward who has peeled five yards off his marker. Straight away the midfielder arcs his run round the back and attacks the goal. The forward turns out if free, or lays it back for the arcing runner to finish. A one-two round the corner from a throw, straight into a shooting chance. Played as an attacking throw-in down the touchline in the final third with a ball, cones to mark the thrower and receiver, and bibs if a marker is added. Walk the timing through first, then add the defenders. A live game set piece, about 10 minutes to rehearse.
Instructions
- The receiver looks uninterested, then comes alive and runs towards the thrower, calling for it
- A first-time, no-look pass on the volley round the corner into the feet of the forward, who has just made a five-yard run away from his marker
- As soon as the ball is played round the corner, the receiver arcs his run round the defender and heads for goal
- The forward receives it and either turns out if unopposed or lays it back to the receiver
- Shoot for goal, or take a touch if you can
- Play it first time into the forward's feet, not to a standing player
- The forward times his five-yard run to peel off his marker as the ball comes in
- The instant it is played round the corner, arc the run round the back and attack the goal
Variation
- Walk it through with no defenders first, then add the markers, then make it fully live. The forward takes a touch to turn if marked, or sets it first time if the runner is on. Switch it to the other touchline so players run it both ways. Add a recovering defender so the finish has to be quick. Vary the finish: a first-time shot, a cutback to the arcing runner, or a drive to the byline.
