Small-Sided Game

A small-sided game to finish the session: a proper match, two teams to two small goals, with one player from each side in goal and the keepers rotated. 5v5 is a good default, but scale it to your numbers: 3v3 for the youngest, and no more than 7 or 8 a side, or players drift out of the game and hide. Scale the pitch to the numbers and the age group. The team with the ball gets wide and uses the space; the moment they lose it, they get compact and make it harder to play through. Keep it a game first.

Instructions

  • Two teams in different bibs, two small goals, a pitch scaled to the group
  • Rotate goalkeepers
  • 5v5 is a good default; 3v3 for the youngest, and no more than 7 or 8 a side
  • Got the ball? Get wide and use the space
  • Lost it? Get compact and make it hard to play through

Variation

  • Allow a maximum of two touches. Make a goal count double once a team strings three or more passes together. Change the pitch size or the goal size. Add a Magic Man who plays for whichever team has the ball.
