Scanning Circle

A passing and awareness game. Six players stand on a circle with a ball each except one, and one player works in the middle. One at a time a player on the circle passes their ball in to the middle; the middle player has to know, before the ball even reaches them, which of the six has not got a ball, and feed that player. The one who passed in is now the free player, so the answer changes every single go and the middle player has to keep checking. The point of the drill is the look, not the pass: by the time the ball arrives the decision should already be made. Keep it flowing and swap the middle player every minute or so.

Instructions

  • Everyone on the circle has a ball except one player
  • One at a time, a player passes their ball in to the middle
  • The middle player scans, spots who hasn't got a ball, and passes to them
  • That player now has a ball; keep it flowing; rotate the player in the middle

Variation

  • Any player on the circle can pass in, in no fixed order, so the middle player cannot guess what is coming. Swap the player in the middle every minute or so, so everyone gets a go as the scanner.
