Passing Gates

Pairs pass along the ground through a small cone gate to each other, and score a point each time the ball goes cleanly through. Simple, high-touch passing practice. Gates dotted around a 20m by 20m area, a pair at each gate with a ball between two. Play it firmly along the ground through the gate to your partner on the other side. Your partner takes a touch to control it, then passes it back through the gate to you. A point each time it goes cleanly through. Make it harder by moving further apart, shrinking the gate, or going one touch. Six or more players in pairs, cones for the gates and a ball between two, 10 to 15 minutes.

Instructions

  • Pairs, a small cone gate between each pair, a ball between two
  • Pass it firmly along the ground through the gate to your partner
  • Your partner takes a touch to control it, then passes it back through the gate
  • A point each time the ball goes cleanly through. Keep count
  • Pass with the inside of the foot, ankle locked, through the middle of the ball
  • Weight it so your partner can control it, not too hard, not too soft
  • First touch out of your feet, ready to pass back
  • Head up to line up the gate before you pass

Variation

  • Move the pair further apart. Shrink the gate. One touch only. Add a second gate so they have to choose which one to pass through.
