Pass and Press

A passing warm-up that is really a race. Three cones in a triangle about eight to ten yards a side, a player on each and two on the one you start from, and one ball. You pass round the triangle and then follow your pass to press whoever you just gave it to. The receiver has to take it on the back foot, open out and play it on round the triangle before the presser gets there, and then they go and press the next one. There are no fixed roles: you become the presser the moment you pass and the receiver the moment the ball comes to you, so players rotate round the triangle on their own. After you press you join the back of whichever cone you have run to. Run it a few minutes each way.

Instructions

  • Three cones in a triangle, a player on each and two on the start cone, one ball
  • Pass round the triangle and follow your pass to press the receiver
  • Take it on the back foot, open out and play it on before the presser gets there
  • Then go and press the next receiver, and keep it going round
  • After you press, join the back of whichever cone you ran to

Variation

  • Two touches maximum, then one touch, to force quicker decisions. Change the direction of play on a call so nobody can pre-plan their pass. Add a second ball so two passes travel at once, which makes it busier to scan and busier to press. Make the triangle bigger or smaller to give more or less time before the press arrives.
