Old School Near-Post Flick-On Corner

A classic attacking corner. The corner is driven hard and flat to the near post, around head or chest height. A runner attacks the front post and flicks the ball on across the face of goal, and a second runner times a late run to the back post to finish. The flick beats the keeper by moving the ball across them, and good runs plus a quality delivery are what make it work. Played in the attacking corner and penalty box with a ball, a goal and a keeper. The taker is in the corner with the ball and the attackers start central, with a near-post runner, a back-post runner and one on the penalty spot for any knockdown. Rehearse the runs without a ball first, then add the delivery, then add defenders for a competitive version. A live game set piece, about 10 minutes to rehearse.

Instructions

  • The taker is in the corner with the ball. Attackers start central: a near-post runner, a back-post runner and one on the penalty spot
  • Corner driven hard and flat to the near post, around head or chest height
  • The near-post runner attacks the front post and flicks the ball on across the face of goal
  • The back-post runner holds, then times a late run to attack the flick and finish
  • Deliver it firm and flat, not floated
  • The near-post runner only needs a glancing touch to redirect the ball, not a full header
  • Time the runs to arrive as the ball is delivered, not early: start late and attack the space
  • The back-post runner stays alert for the flick carrying all the way across

Variation

  • Walk the runs through with no ball first, then add the taker's delivery. Add a defender to mark each attacker for a competitive, game-realistic version. Switch the delivery: an in-swinger to tempt the keeper, then an out-swinger away from them. Add a short-corner option so the taker can go short if the near post is crowded.
