Passing warm-up · 16 seconds

Name & Pass

A circle passing warm-up for the whole group, with two balls going at the same time. Everyone spreads out in a big circle and the two balls start on opposite sides. Before each pass the player looks up and shouts the name of whoever they are passing to, then passes across or around the circle rather than to the player next to them. The receiver takes a touch, looks up, picks someone new and calls that name. Both balls run independently, so a pass can come to anyone at any time. Whole group, 6 or more, in a circle roughly 10 to 15 yards across, with two balls and cones to mark the circle if you want them.

Instructions

  • The whole group spreads out in a big circle. Start with two balls on opposite sides of the circle
  • Before you pass, look up and shout the name of the player you are passing to, loud and clear
  • Pass across or around the circle, not just to your neighbour. Receive, look up, pick someone new and call their name
  • Keep both balls going at once. Keep it loud and keep moving, it is a warm-up to wake everyone up
  • Pass with the side of the foot, firm and along the ground so it is easy to control
  • Receive across your body with a positive first touch, then look up for your next pass
  • Stay alert and keep moving on the spot, with two balls it can come to you any time

Variation

  • Add a second word after the name, a colour or “yes”, so they talk a little more. Add a third ball once the group is comfortable. Two touch, then one touch, to speed it up. Reverse it: call the name of the player you want it FROM, then show for the pass.
