Heading Game

One goal, two teams either side, and the tempo is the drill. A player from the heading team runs out to the penalty spot while a player from the opposing team goes in goal. A teammate serves the ball up and they head it at goal, trying to beat the keeper. The player who has just headed it then sprints straight into goal, because the other team is already coming out to head, and if you are slow getting back they head into an open net. Everybody walks the same four stations: serve, head, go in goal, then back of your own queue. Run it continuously, side to side, and keep score between the two teams.

Instructions

  • Speed is everything: the instant you have headed it, sprint back into goal, if you are slow the other team can head into an open net
  • Attack the ball, get your forehead to it and head it down and into the corners, away from the keeper
  • The thrower serves it up accurately so the header can attack it at pace

Variation

  • Move the heading spot closer or further from goal to change the difficulty. Throw it wider so the header has to adjust and steer it across goal. Keep score between the two teams to crank up the intensity.
