Small-sided game · 22 seconds

Double Goals

A 4 v 4 small-sided game, from SoccerDrive, that pays you for using the width. A big goal and a keeper at each end, plus a three yard gate on each touchline at halfway. Passing or dribbling through either side gate is worth a point, scoring in the big goal is worth two, and you do not have to use a gate first. That scoring is the whole lesson: if one side of the pitch is crowded, the open gate on the other side is worth going to, so the game rewards switching the play rather than forcing it through the middle. Scan as you wait so you know your options before the ball arrives, take your first touch forward when you receive on the flank, and feint towards one goal before switching it quickly to the other side. 10 players, 4 v 4 plus two keepers, on a 30 by 20 yard grid.

Instructions

  • 4v4 on a 30 by 20 grid, a big goal and keeper at each end, plus a 3-yard gate on each touchline at halfway
  • A point for passing or dribbling through either side gate, and 2 points for scoring in the big goal. You do not have to use a gate first
  • Scan the field as you wait, so you know your options before the ball arrives
  • Receiving on the flank, take your first touch forward into the space
  • Feint an attack towards one goal, then switch the ball quickly to the other side
  • If one side is crowded, switch the play and use the open gate
  • Heads up throughout: a point for a gate and a point for the goal, so keep looking

Variation

  • Let the team in possession attack both goals and both gates, not just their own end. Limit to two touches to force quicker switches of play. Make a gate worth two points to really push them to use the width.
