Attacking Decisions

A 2 v 1 from a triangle of cones outside the box, built so the attacker has to read the defender rather than run a set pattern. The player on the back cone passes out to the right and follows the pass in to support, which makes it 2 v 1. At the same moment the player on the left cone becomes the defender and sprints across to block the ball. What happens next is up to the attacker: shoot early if the defender has not got across, take the defender on, or square it to the supporting runner. The video shows four goes and each one ends differently on purpose: an early shot, a square ball finished by the supporting player, a tackle won by the defender, and a one-two played round the defender and finished on the move. A group waits on each cone and everyone has a ball, so after each go the three involved join the back of their own group and the next three step up, which means every player attacks and defends.

Instructions

  • Three cones in a triangle outside the box, a group on each, a ball for every player on the back cone
  • The back player passes out to the right and follows the pass in to support, so it is 2 v 1
  • The left cone is the defender and sprints across to block the ball
  • The attacker decides: shoot early, take the defender on, or square it to the supporting runner
  • Rotate after every go so everyone attacks and defends

Variation

  • Start the pass left or right at random so nobody knows which way it is going. Put a time limit on the decision to force it quicker, move the defender's cone back to make it easier or closer to make it harder, or build it up to 3 v 2 for a bigger picture.
