2v2 Plus Two
A 2 v 2 plus two possession game, from SoccerDrive. Two against two inside a square, and each team has two team-mates stood outside it on opposite sides. You score by keeping the ball and connecting from your man on one side, through the 2 v 2, to your man on the other side. One team works top to bottom, the other side to side, which is why the four outside players sit where they do. The outside players stay on their own side and never come into the square, moving up and down their line only, and they play two touches, so they work as a quick wall rather than as an extra player. Inside it is about checking away to make space and showing back into it, and about playing it backwards when it is not on forward rather than forcing it into a defender. Scoring does not hand the ball over: change possession after a while so one side does not keep it all session and the other spends the whole time chasing. 8 players, 2 v 2 in the middle plus two on the sides each, in a square about 15 to 20 yards.
Instructions
- 2v2 in the middle. Each team has two team-mates on opposite sides (two-touch). One team attacks top-to-bottom, the other side-to-side. The outside players stay on their own side, they do not come into the square
- Score by keeping possession and connecting from your team-mate on one side across to your team-mate on the other side
- Check away to create space, then show back into it. If it is not on forward, play it back, do not force it
- Check away from the ball to create space, then show back into it to receive
- Use the outside players as a quick wall, they have two touches so play sharp
- React fast the moment you win or lose the ball, transition is where you score or concede
- Open your body to see both sides so you can switch the point of attack
- If a team cannot win the ball back, hand it over after about a minute so possession stays even
Variation
- Outside players to one touch to make it quicker. Play 3v3 with one player on the sideline; the outside player can use both end lines to score. A goal only counts if the ball has reached both sides since the last score.
